Hermeto Pascoal IS music. An iconic composer and mul6-instrumentalist from Lagoa da Canoa, Alagoas, he embarked on his musical journey in 1950 at the age of 14 in Recife. A winner of 2 Latin Grammy Awards and an Honorary Doctorate from institutions including New England Conservatory, Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), and Juilliard School (New York), Hermeto has led influential groups such as Quarteto Novo (1967), Brazilian Octopus (1969), and his own «Group» since the late 1970s. His global acclaim stems from performances at prestigious festivals like Montreux (Switzerland) in 1979, marked by the release of the double album Hermeto Pascoal Ao Vivo. Even in the early 1970s, Miles Davis dubbed him «the most impressive musician in the world.»
A prolific composer with over 10,000 written pieces, Hermeto’s Calendário do Som project of the ’90s saw him penning one composition daily, later compiled into a 414-page book released in 1999. Ever inventive, he introduced concepts like Universal Music and Music of the Aura. Fondly known as the «Sorcerer of Sounds,» he plays his array of instruments— including keyboard, piano, bass flute, melodica, 8-bass accordion, pigs, keale, and bugle— alongside his legendary group, a lineup that’s remained unchanged for over 45 years. Few musicians attain the stature of Hermeto, a true maestro and Brazilian cultural icon whose mastery extends across multi-instrumentalism, composition, and arrangement.
Hermeto believes in the universality and freedom of music. With over 35 releases, in 2024 he unveiled Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo – Pra Você, Ilza, an album dedicated to the memory of his beloved wife, Ilza da Silva, released by Rocinante Records. This album, wich features 13 tracks selected from 198 composi6ons written between 1999 and 2000, showcases Hermeto’s genius in crahing each arrangement spontaneously in the studio. The album, a hearielt tribute recorded 24 years aher Ilza’s passing, encapsulates their enduring love, with Hermeto reflecting, «Everything I did, everything I do, everything I keep doing, Dona Ilza is wonderfully present.»
Hermeto graces stages worldwide with his Group, the renowned «Nave Mãe» («Mother Ship»), a plaiorm that propelled the careers of prominent Brazilian instrumentalists like Carlos Malta, Jovino Santos Neto, Nenê, Marcio Bahia, Vinicius Dorin, and Heraldo do Monte. The current lineup includes I6berê Zwarg (bass), Jota P. (saxophones and flutes) Fabio Pascoal (percussion), André Marques (piano), and Ajurinã Zwarg (drums). Together with the «Champion» himself, their performances are an indescribable, unforgeaable, and side effect-free sensory experience.
